Vietnam’s international internet connections have been restored to 50 per cent capacity as of Sunday, according to the Department of Telecommunications.
Internet connections have gradually improved thanks to data being diverted to land-based systems, but performance might still slow at peak hours, the department said.
Telecommunication firms, including VNPT and FPT, have opened up these alternate systems to relieve the submarine cables that are Vietnam’s primary international internet connections.
Four submarine cables, Asia-America Gateway (AAG), Asia Africa Europe 1 (AAE-1), Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) and Intra Asia (IA), are experiencing issues, seriously affecting performance and reliability.
This was the first time Vietnamese telecommunication firms experienced a loss of service across several submarine fibre optic cables, which has affected both Vietnam and the Asia region at large.
