A group of investors has asked for the transport ministry's permission to build a new terminal at Da Nang International Airport in the central Da Nang City.

The new terminal is proposed to be built next to the current terminal in the airport.

The investors, comprising the Thang Long Air Services Corporation (TASECO), the AOV Investment Corporation and the Ha Noi Construction Corporation, proposed the terminal's construction after the ministry called upon organisations and individuals to invest in infrastructure of the railways, airports and roads.

Pham Ngoc Thanh, representative of the investors and president of TASECO's management board, said that the current terminal was designed to handle between four and six million passengers by 2020.

However, the launching of more international and domestic flights to the city has remarkably raised the number of passengers using the airport. Last year, the airport handled five million passengers.

The construction of a new terminal, with the capacity of handling four million passengers, will help curb the potential risks of overcrowding in the years to come, Thanh added.

The new terminal will be built on a build-operate-transfer basis.

The investors would present specific construction plans when their proposal is approved, he said.

The current terminal at Da Nang International Airport was built over an area of 14,400sqm. The four-storey terminal, with an investment capital of more than VND1.3 trillion, became operational in 2010, with the capacity of handling four million passengers annually.
