Following its usual rollout cycle, a developer beta is expected immediately after the keynote, followed by a public beta in July. The official release is likely to arrive in September on compatible devices.

Siri reimagined as a standalone app

One of the most significant shifts in iOS 27 is the emergence of Siri as a standalone application. Sources indicate that Apple is building a completely new app, integrating “Extensions” across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

This new version allows users to interact with Siri via both text and voice, while also storing conversation history - a notable step toward competing with modern AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.

Siri is also expected to be deeply integrated into the Dynamic Island interface. When activated, it may display a “Search or Ask” prompt accompanied by a glowing cursor effect, reflecting a refreshed design language inspired by WWDC 2026 visuals.

Apple is reportedly bringing back personalized Siri capabilities that were delayed in 2024. For instance, users could ask about a relative’s flight or a lunch appointment, with Siri automatically compiling relevant information from Mail and Messages.

CEO Tim Cook said the company is “very much looking forward to delivering a more personalized Siri experience later this year.”

5G satellite connectivity takes center stage

iOS 27 is also rumored to support 5G satellite connectivity, although the feature may be limited to premium models such as iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra, equipped with a new C2 modem.

Apple is said to be developing additional satellite-based features, including using Apple Maps offline via satellite, sending images through Messages without cellular coverage, and enabling third-party apps to integrate satellite capabilities.

A key improvement could allow iPhones to connect to satellites without requiring users to point their devices toward the sky, addressing one of the current system’s biggest limitations.

This development comes as Amazon reportedly plans to acquire Globalstar, Apple’s satellite service partner. The two companies have also signed an expanded agreement to support satellite connectivity for both current and future Apple products.

Currently, Apple offers satellite-based features such as emergency SOS, Find My, roadside assistance, and messaging, all available free of charge in supported regions.

Focus on performance over visual overhaul

Rather than a dramatic redesign, iOS 27 is expected to follow a path similar to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, prioritizing performance improvements, bug fixes, and overall system stability.

Apple is also refining its Liquid Glass design language to deliver a smoother and more consistent user experience, even if visual changes remain subtle.

Apple Intelligence expands across the system

The Apple Intelligence ecosystem is set to expand significantly in iOS 27, particularly on devices from iPhone 15 Pro onward.

New Visual Intelligence features may allow users to scan nutrition labels to track calories, capture business cards to save contacts, or digitize event tickets directly into the Wallet app.

The Safari browser is expected to gain the ability to automatically name tab groups based on content, while the Photos app may introduce new AI-powered editing tools.

Apple is also testing an upgraded keyboard capable of advanced autocorrection and contextual suggestions, resembling tools like Grammarly.

Compatibility list: iPhone 11 phased out

According to leaks, iOS 27 will support devices from iPhone 12 onward. This means models such as iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, and iPhone SE (2nd generation) will no longer receive the update, though they are expected to continue receiving security patches for iOS 26 for several more years.

While compatibility spans from iPhone 12 through newer generations like iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, many Apple Intelligence features will require more powerful hardware, specifically devices from iPhone 15 Pro and above.

With a combination of artificial intelligence, satellite connectivity, and performance enhancements, iOS 27 is shaping up to be more than just an annual update. It may represent a pivotal step in Apple’s transition toward an AI-first iPhone ecosystem.

As with all pre-WWDC speculation, official confirmation remains pending. But if these reports hold true, iOS 27 could lay the foundation for a new era of intelligent, deeply connected mobile experiences.
