VietNamNet Bridge - Taiwan-based Wintek Corp will build a $100 million plant in the northern Bac Giang Province to manufacture touch screens for Apple Corp’s products.

It said Sunday it has signed a contract with the Saigon Bac Giang Industrial Zone Joint Stock Co to lease 60 hectares for the plant in the Quang Chau Industrial Zone.

The plant, Wintek’s first in Vietnam, will manufacture touch screens for Iphone and Ipad when it opens next year.

Wintek, established in 1990, is a well-known producer of LCD, LCM, touch panel, cover glass and other tech products. It is one of only two manufacturers in the world to make touch screens for the Ipad.

The Quang Chau IZ, near National Highway 1A and the Cau River, and located about an hour’s drive from Hanoi, now has dozens of Japanese and Taiwan companies, especially in the high-tech field, including Sanyo, Nochirin, Tawang, and Universal Microelectronics.

The 600-hectare IZ is one of the largest and most modern in northern Vietnam, with designated areas for manufacturing, housing, and recreation.
