Meanwhile, domestic software products have been used by smaller enterprises such as Fast Business, Lemon by Diginet, AccNet by Lac Viet, Misa and PERP by Pythis.
The projects waiting to “go alive”
“Go alive” is a concept which says that an enterprises resource planning (ERP) project is successfully implemented and put into operation.
A lot of projects have been developed for the last many years, but they still cannot “go alive”. Five years ago, a leading jewelry company decided to apply an ERP provided by a big solution provider. However, after that, the company decided to say goodbye to the service provider and cooperated with a domestic company. However, to date, no perfect solution has been found, while both the solutions could not bring success.
A big wooden furniture company had to spend many years to look for a solution to manage the production. However, it recently decided to cancel the project and kicked off another project with a new partner. A big real estate company and a leading garment company were also unsuccessful with ERP projects.
The reported failure has discouraged many enterprises. Meanwhile, the failure forced both enterprises and partners suffer.
The jewelry company was unsuccessful with the ERP project, because gold and silver products are reasonable products. Therefore, the company has to regularly change the designs. Meanwhile, the amount of products is low, but the value is high, and the distribution network is not concentrated. Therefore, the company needs a special program which well understands the specific characteristics of the company’s operation.
As for the wooden furniture producer, the production programming could not control the path of products to serve the production process and settle the business problems. Therefore, the ERP was also unsuccessful.
Bibica and Savimex are the two rare enterprises which have been successfully applying Oracle in Vietnam. Experts say that it is very difficult to find the partners who well understand enterprises’ business models. Besides, the projects would fail if investors lack a professional vision.
Risks come from all sides
In 2004, Tan Hiep Phat began using a production management system, but it was not successful. According to Tran Quy Thanh, Tan Hiep Phat’s General Director, at that time, the company’s staff was still young with limited capability to access new technologies, while the partner was an international company, which, after a lot of merger and acquisition deals, did not support clients in Vietnam any more.
In early 2007, the company decided to seek a new solution. In 2010, the ERP system by SAP was implemented. According to Thanh, ERP should be seen as the lesson for choosing partners, and that the right partners are the ones who can help enterprises succeed.
Regarding the choosing of partners, Nguyen Chi Duc, General Director of Tectura, the partner of Microsoft, the market has witnessed great progress when ERP have been applied more deeply in different sectors. He said that in order to succeed with ERP solutions, it is necessary to choose the ones fitting business models and development goals.
“The things that enterprises need to consider when choosing ERP are not only the prices of the software pieces, but the quality of services and the application,” Duc said.
