VietNamNet Bridge – While the majority of students are busy preparing for the new academic year, many other students are still weeping because they still don’t know where to go.

Getting overloaded, schools refuse students

A lot of parents gathered some days ago in front of the Phan Van Tri Primary School in district 1 in HCM City, to protest the decision by the school not to admit their children.

Prior to that, on August 5, the primary school announced it would admit 35 more students to the schools. However, in the final list of the school’s students, 20 students could not find their names.

Dinh Thien Can, Head of the Education and Training sub-department, explained that after considering the number of students, the school decided to accept some more students and announced that it would admit 35 more seats. However, all the cases must be approved by the district’s local authorities.

“We have agreed to allow 15 of them to go to the school. These are the students, whose parents are working in the agencies and offices located next to the school,” he said. “Meanwhile, the other 20 students live in other districts; therefore, we decided not to accept them”.

As such, the problem here is that the primary school did not give detailed information about the enrolment, which has lead to the fact that a lot of students still cannot go to school, though the new academic year has begun.

The headmaster of a primary school in district 4, said that parents really have to “struggle” to choose good schools for their children. “Star schools always have to admit the students, whose relatives are VIP officials, even though they are overloaded,” she said.

Under the current regulations, schools prioritize to accept the students who live in the same localities where the schools are situated. However, a primary school in district 4 has to admit 75 students from other districts this year. All the students are the children of the officials working at the state agencies in the district.

The Ky Dong Primary School in district 3 has also reportedly received 112 students from other districts, and increased the number of students to 45 students per class.

The Thu Duc district’s education sub-department said that it has received the proposal to move to other schools from thousands of primary and secondary school students. Though the new academic year has begun, a lot of parents are still moving heaven and earth to ask for the permission to bring their children to other schools.

An, 40, has been living in Thu Duc district since 2006, but her child went to the Phuoc Binh primary school in district 9 in the previous academic year. Therefore, she decided to bring the child to the Tu Duc Primary School in Thu Duc, which is nearer to her house.

An said that the headmaster of the Tu Duc School signed a document, admitting her child to the school. However, on the school opening day, An astonishingly could not find the name of her child in the list of students.

“After contacting with the district’s education sub-department and a lot of schools, An was told that the child was named in the list of the students of Nguyen Van Banh Primary School. An then applied for studying at Nguyen Van Banh School, but she was rejected because the school had not received any information about the case. Finally, An realized that the district has just sent the list of student sot the Nguyen Van Banh School, which might have not reached the school.

“As such, my child is now staying at home, while other children have come back to school,” An complained.

When asked the Thu Duc education sub-department, the officials here simply said that the schools in the district are always under the pressure because of the overly high number of immigrants, and that people should “sympathize” with the schools.
