The Japanese director will hold an exchange with audiences after his film Broker is screened at HCM City Theatre on the evening of April 10 and hold a special exchange with young film directors at La Vela Saigon Hotel on April 12.

Koreeda is a Japanese film director, producer, screenwriter, and editor. He initially began his career in television and has since directed more than a dozen feature films, including Nobody Knows in 2004, Still Walking in 2008, and After the Storm in 2016.

He won the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for Like Father, Like Son and won the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for Shoplifters.

Over 200 Vietnamese and foreign filmmakers, visitors, and artists have gathered together for the first ever HIFF 2024 which will run until April 13.

Aside from Koreeda, local movie lovers will have the opportunity to meet famous directors from across the world such as Anne Fontaine, the director of films such as Bolero and Coco avant Chanel, and Kim Jee Woon, director of A Tales of Two Sisters.

The event will give awards to several outstanding Vietnamese and foreign movies, host multiple relevant activities, and promote the local film industry.

There are three main competition categories, including Southeast Asian, debut, and short films, with relevant awards such as Golden Star being given for the best Southeast Asian film, Best Emerging Director, Best short film, and HCM City film.

There are also awards on offer for directors, actors, actresses, cinematographers, editors, and visual effects.
