The suspect is a Japanese national who monitored flight information online before taking actions alone as a lone wolf, according to sources.

Interrogations indicate that the suspect had certainly threatened to shoot down the Vietnamese plane, although he had no motive and no purpose for doing so.

Authorities subsequently discovered that the man had been suffering from various neurological problems, meaning he presented a security threat but not a serious one.

Currently, Japanese authorities are verifying the case and are yet to come to an official conclusion.

A Vietnam Airlines plane on January 5 was forced to be diverted and conduct an emergency landing after a man had threatened to shoot down the plane over Tokyo Bay during a phone call.

The Boeing 787 was carrying 47 passengers, together with a 15-member crew, onboard a flight from Narita (Japan) to Hanoi (Vietnam).

The plane landed safely at Fukuoka airport where a safety assessment and further investigations were carried.

After the conclusion of the initial investigations, the plane was permitted to continue its journey to Hanoi, and it successfully landed at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi on the same day.
