Tokyo stocks plunged 4.09 percent shortly after opening on Friday, following a sharp sell-off on U.S. and European markets amid the European debt crisis and worries over the American economy.
The Nikkei index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange fell abruptly 395. 09 points to 9,264.09.
The broader Topix index of all first section shares tumbled 3. 50 percent or 28.93 points to 797.43, off the earlier low of 794.16.
