Hugel turns things into art which might otherwise be thrown away as his sculptures are preferentially formed of what is trash, broken or discarded. Shattered skateboards and splits of wood become the life-sized demonstration of a hyena and the image of a witch on a concrete wall turns out to be made of old napkins.

Besides turning “poor materials” into humans, animals or musical instruments – with matching sounds – Hugel’s other passion is the skateboard. It leaves its mark in his work or becomes the centerpiece itself as in the sculpture “Silverride”. The creative position in the room, a moment of freedom in zero-gravity is what Hugel is longing for – in skating and in art.

Born in 1977, Hugel studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 2000 to 2006 and completed his studies under Professor Monika Brandmeier.

During the course of his studies and in the years after, his sculptures, installations and concrete images were exhibited in numerous exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. He was awarded the Robert-Sterl-Prize in Dresden and the Audience Award of the “Big Arts Exhibition” in his hometown Halle (Saale) in eastern Germany.

Center of Contemporary Fine Arts is located at 17 Thanh Cong Street in Ba Binh District.
