Vietnam’s head coach, Kim Sang Sik, declared the 2024 ASEAN Cup (AFF Cup) victory over Thailand as a historic achievement but emphasized that it is only the beginning of greater ambitions for the team.
“This victory is historic. It was a difficult match, but thanks to the unwavering support of all the Vietnamese people, we managed to triumph. I also want to thank all the players for their resilience and determination. They fought until the very end and worked incredibly hard,” said Kim Sang Sik, reflecting on the team’s victory in Thailand.
The coach, who previously won the K-League at the club level, shared the significance of this national team achievement: “I’ve won titles as a club coach, but this is my first time experiencing such a moment with a national team. Winning at the national level holds a special meaning.”
A promising start for Vietnam’s national team
Despite the ASEAN Cup triumph, Kim Sang Sik maintained a forward-looking perspective, stating: “This is only the beginning. We’ve achieved our first goal, but Vietnam has bigger challenges ahead, including the final round of the Asian Cup qualifiers and the SEA Games at the end of the year. I’m eager to treat these competitions as new starting points for our journey together.”
In the thrilling 3-2 victory over Thailand, forward Tuan Hai emerged as the hero, scoring two critical goals. Addressing his decision to field Tuan Hai in the final despite limited appearances during the tournament, Kim Sang Sik explained:
“I prepare for each match with a focus on victory. Tuan Hai had many chances to play, but timing is crucial. He trained diligently, and I told him his opportunity would come. The final was that moment, and he seized it brilliantly. I’m grateful to him for the important goals, which were accompanied by a bit of luck.”
Controversial moments in the match
The coach also commented on the controversial “phantom goal” by a Thai player: “I don’t believe it was a legitimate goal. It was disappointing, but thankfully, my players remained composed and undeterred.”
Kim Sang Sik’s reflections underscore his dedication to building a stronger future for Vietnam’s national team, even as they celebrate their historic victory.
