For the first time in 27 years, Vietnam defeated Thailand at home in a final. Reflecting on the milestone, Kim acknowledged his predecessor Park Hang Seo, stating, “Coach Park once said we shouldn’t fear Thailand, and today, Vietnam showed its strength against them. I’m thrilled and excited about this victory. It’s the first home win against Thailand in 27 years, bringing joy to Vietnamese fans as we start a new year. As I said before, no mountain is insurmountable.”

Kim emphasized the importance of tailored preparation for each match.

“When preparing for a game, I always analyze and devise specific strategies for each opponent with the sole aim of winning. Today, I encouraged Xuan Son to play with greater aggression. The same goes for the other players, who gave their all and secured a well-deserved win,” Kim explained.

Praising standout players

Kim lavished praise on striker Nguyen Xuan Son, whose brace secured Vietnam’s victory.

“I’m delighted to have Xuan Son in the squad. He’s a player you simply cannot leave out. That said, I think he could use a bit more composure, but he was outstanding today,” Kim noted.

The coach also highlighted the contributions of Doan Ngoc Tan.

“Ngoc Tan is a special player - tireless and hardworking. He helped Vietnam handle Thailand’s attacking threats effectively and brought positive energy to the team,” Kim said.

Regret and focus on the second leg

Despite the victory, Kim lamented the missed opportunity to win by a larger margin.

“We got the win, but it should have been a two-goal victory to give us a bigger advantage. However, I’m satisfied. I hope the players learn from this and prepare well for the second leg,” he remarked.

Kim also acknowledged the team’s lapse that led to Thailand’s goal.

“Our concession came from a lack of caution. This should serve as a reminder for my players to stay focused and careful in the upcoming match,” he concluded.
