VietNamNet Bridge – Farmers in Vinh Chau district, the southern province of Soc Trang, are harvesting violet onion to supply the market at the lunar New Year (Tet) holiday.

Vinh Chau has the largest violet onion planting area in the Mekong Delta, with over 4200 hectares. It is called the “kingdom of violet onions”.

Local farmers said at average price of VND15-18 million ($750-900) per ton, they earn net profit of over VND150 million ($7500) per a hectare.

After onions are pulled out, they are dried for several days until the leaves are faded.

Many people earn extra money from cleaning onions.

Many children also do this job. This boy said he earns VND50,000 ($2.5) a day.

Mrs. Tran Thi Duyen said her four-member family earn VND200,000 ($10) a day from binding onions.

A woman and two children clean onions.

These kids will have new clothes this Tet because the price for violet onion doubled this year.

Everyone is happy.
