The UN-Arab League joint special envoy Kofi Annan will visit Syria by the end of May to discuss the implementation of his six-point peace plan, Syrian foreign ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said on his Facebook page on Sunday.

A team of UN officials headed Sunday for the Syrian Foreign Ministry for talks with Syrian officials on the situation in the country and Annan's cease-fire plan that has gone into effect on April 12. The meeting also aimed at making preparation for Annan's visit.

Babacar Gaye, military adviser to UN Secretary General Ban Ki- moon, Herve Ladsous, UN under-secretary-general for peacekeeping and Jean-Marie Guehenno, deputy to Annan, arrived in Syria on Friday.

The cease-fire has been shaky from the very beginning as mutual mistrust between the government and the opposition has overwhelmed the endeavors to solve the crisis politically.
