Due to the prolonged dry season, water levels at many reservoirs in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau are at or lower than dead water levels.
People in the central province of Quang Nam are suffering from a severe water shortage due to extreme and prolonged hot weather and drought.
More than 60 percent of water to Vietnam comes from other countries. Scientists have warned that 45 percent of land area in the southern region will suffer serious saline intrusion in the future.

The Central Highlands in general, Dak Lak province in particular, is facing the toughest drought in years. Ponds and lakes are dried to the bottom; fields are chapped; thousands of hectares of crops are being withered by thirst.
Fields are cracked, flowers wither, coffee gardens are burned, people have to skim sips of water from the Ba River to use… This is the current situation of people in the Central Highlands in this year's drought.
