VietNamNet Bridge – A selection of by Vietnamese lacquer and engraved paintings is on display at an exhibition at HCM City Fine Arts Museum.

Fine art: Vet Xich Xe Tang Giac (Tracks of the Enemy's Tanks) by Huynh Van Thuan is part of an exhibition of lacquer paintings now on display at the HCM City Fine Arts Museum.

Trinh Xuan Yen, the museum's deputy director, said: "We want to introduce the history and development of the Vietnamese lacquer art to both local and foreign visitors. The museum has collected nearly 130 paintings since 1987. We have shown only 80 of them, while the rest are being restored."

The works depict scenes from people's daily life, landscapes, romantic love and struggle for independence. Works from lacquer artist virtuosos like Nguyen Gia Tri, Nguyen Sang, and Huynh Van Thuan are part of the display.

Highlighted works include Vet Xich Xe Tang Giat (Tracks of the Enemy's Tanks) by Huynh Van Thuan, 84, a graduate of the Indochina Fine Arts College (currently Viet Nam Fine Arts University).

"We have created seven panels featuring images and information about these works to provide visitors more knowledge about great Vietnamese lacquer paintings," Yen said.

A collection of works by contemporary painters like Dao Tri Minh and Duong Sen are also being displayed. They include Canh Chim The Ky (Bird Wings Flying to the New Century) by Minh and Mau Nhiet Doi (Tropical Colours) by Sen.

The exhibition is being held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of National Day (September 2), and will remain open until December 31. The museum is at 97A Pho Duc Chinh Street in District 1.
