Last year, 1,954 Lao students studied in Vietnam, 495 in China, 164 in Thailand, 48 in Japan and 48 in Australia.

The Lao Government is focusing its efforts on human resource training and considers it key to managing its growing numbers of students overseas, especially in Vietnam, China, Thailand and Cambodia.

The Laos Ministry of Education and Sports (MES) reported that over the last four years approximately 2,900 students per year have left Laos to study abroad in 26 different countries.

In 2013 alone, 2,150 students pursued scholarships to study overseas.

This year, Vietnam grants 907 scholarships to Lao students, including 405 science and technology places.

Those who study in Vietnam have to learn Vietnamese language for a minimum of one year at Laos National University before coming to Vietnam.

In addition, the Vietnamese language is seen as a foreign language and is included in the curriculum at secondary schools, boarding schools and schools for overseas Vietnamese.
