According to Chairman Duong Cao Thanh of Cau Giay district, the used motorcycle market was moved from Phung Hung to Dich Vong in 2001.

After 13 years of operation, the market is now overloaded. Thus, Cau Giay district proposes to move the market to the newly-established Bac Tu Liem district.

Commenting on the proposal, the director of the Hanoi Department of Trade and Industry Le Hong Thang said that Cau Giay should carefully consider the proposal because the used motorcycle market is one of the factors facilitating socio-economic development of the district.

Thang suggested to Cau Giay authorities to move the market to another place within the district, not to another district.

Traders in the Dich Vong used motorbike market said that if the market is relocated, they will abandon the business because it took them up to five to seven years to attract clients after they moved from Phung Hung to Dich Vong.

A trader named Thang said in recent years the motorcycle market has become saturated, so the used motorbike business faces a lot of difficulties. His monthly sales have dropped from 100 motorcycles to 30. Many traders have quit the business, and if the market is relocated, he would also abandon this business.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Toan, another trader at the market, said it is difficult to set up a used vehicle market. The market not only provides used motorcycles for Hanoians but other provinces throughout the countries such as Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Thap, and Ben Tre.

He said Bac Tu Liem is a new district, with low living standards and far from the center, so it will be inconvenient for used motorcycle traders.

The Dich Vong market for used old motorcycles has an area of 7,000 m2, with 88 kiosks and 350-400 traders.
