VietNamNet Bridge – A mature elephant suddenly appeared in a residential area in southern Dong Nai Province's Dinh Quan District on Thursday, causing local residents to panic.

Local forest management staff quickly appeared and instructed local people not to anger the beast.

However, the large crowd people surrounding the elephant frightened it and it destroyed cashew trees and part of maize field.

The one-tusk elephant is believed to be about 30 years old.

* Animal feed firm fined $6000 for pollution

New Hope Company, located in Ha Noi's Sai Dong Industrial Park, on Thursday was fined VND125 million (US$5,950) for causing pollution to the environment, according to the city's People's Committee.

The company, which produces animal feed, was found to have ignored classifying hazardous waste - and had no temporary waste storage.
