The prince died at 12pm on February 12 (Vietnam time) in the US, at the age of 90. He was cremated according to Catholic rites.
Prince Vinh Gieu is the 21st son of King Thanh Thai. He was recognized as a prince when his father was on the throne and became the last prince of the 13 kings of the Nguyen dynasty.
Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Vinh Khanh, the chief of the communications and PR group of the Nguyen Phuoc family (Nguyen royal family) in Hue city said that there are still a number of children of Kings Duy Tan and Bao Dai, but they are not recognized as princes because they were born after the kings abdicated.
According to Khanh, Prince Vinh Gieu has five children and he faced a lot of difficulties in the daily life in the US. He returned home for the last time in 2011, on the occasion of the death anniversary of King Thanh Thai.
King Thanh Thai (1879 - 1954) was the 10th king of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945), whose real name is Nguyen Phuoc Buu Lan. Reigning from 1889 to 1907, he was one of three kings who fought against the French most drastically. His successors were Nguyen Phuoc Vinh San or King Duy Tan.
