VietNamNet Bridge - Along with the victory of the men’s national chess team, Le Quang Liem has closed an unbeaten tournament and back to the group of super-grandmasters of the world, with Elo 2707.7.
Le Quang Liem did not lose any games at the World Chess Olympiad 2012.
The male team ended the most successful World Chess Olympiad to date when it finished the tournament at the 7th place after 11 rounds. The great leap through eighth grades in the 11th round came after the team won 3-1 before Uzbekistan on September 9.
In the 11th round, Le Quang Liem faced international grandmaster Rustam Kasimdzhanov. At the 2010 Asian Games (Guangzhou, China), Kasimdzhanov defeated Liem to win the gold medal. This time, Liem had a draw and shared points with the Uzbekistan player.
While Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son was off, international grandmaster Dao Thien Hai and international master Nguyen Duc Hoa shone in time to win two important games, taking Vietnam over Uzbekistan.
After this tournament, Le Quang Liem has officially returned to the group of super-grandmasters of the world and his position on the FIDE rankings has been significantly improved. His latest Elo has increased to 2707.7, thanks to the newly-acquired point of 14.7.
The final day of the tournament also saw the spectacular change. Chinese team which took the lead for a period suddenly dropped to number 3 after it was defeated by Ukraine. Armenia won the champion for the men’s even, after trouncing Hungary. Russian team defeated Germany to rank second thanks to a 3-1 win in the last round.
In the women’s event, the Vietnamese team defeated the Turkish youth team 4-0 before and ended the competition in 26th place.
Also in the final day, FIDE announced Baku city as the host of the 2016 World Chess Olympiad.
