VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam’s top chess player Le Quang Liem lost to grandmaster Yu Yangyi from mainland China in the ninth round of the Gibraltar International Chess Festival 2019, held on January 30.

Both maintained a balanced game until Liem, Elo 2,714, made consecutive mistakes and Yu, Elo 2,764, managed a checkmate after 41 moves.

This sole loss after nine rounds pushed Liem to 19th on the table, while Yu leveled up to 3rd.  

In the last round held today, Liem will face top player Santos Latasa Jaime from Spain, Elo 2,581, and he has to win to improve his rank.
