VietNamNet Bridge – The head of the Vietnam’s sports delegation to the 27th Southeast Asian SEA Games – Mr. Lam Quang Thanh – has chosen swimmer Hoang Quy Phuoc as the national-flag holder for the delegation at the opening ceremony of the 2013 SEA Games.
Phuoc was selected thanks to his good performance and his good looks. Phuoc is the SEA Games defending champion in the men’s 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Phuoc is also one of the leading hopes of Vietnam’s swimming besides female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien.
However, the final decision will be made at the last meeting of leaders of the Vietnam sports delegation since they have to wait for the competition schedule of swimmers at the SEA Games. If Phuoc has to compete on December 12, the next day after the opening, he may be replaced by another athlete.
At the 26th SEA Games, the flag carrier for Vietnam's sports delegation was high-jumper Nguyen Duy Bang. Bang also took the lead of the Vietnam’s delegation at the 22nd SEA Games opening, held in Vietnam.
So far, all flag carriers for the national sports delegation were men, including Taekwondo artist Nguyen Van Hung at the 23rd SEA Games, wushu artist Nguyen Manh Quyen at the 25th SEA Games, volleyball player Ngo Van Kieu at the 2010 Asian Games and fencer Nguyen Tien Nhat at the 2012 Olympics.
