VietNamNet Bridge – The roof of the Danang International Airport, which is worth VND1.35 trillion (over $64 million), which has been leaking for nearly three years, is being fixed with advanced technology from South Korea.

Mr. Phan Kieu Hung, director of the Da Nang International Airport Management Center, said the roof has leaked during downpours because of connections between the roof edge and the light collecting panels.

He said the roof of the Danang International Airport terminal is designed in a wavy style, with hundreds of panels to take in light. In the humid climate in Vietnam, the connections between panels are not tight. It is difficult to find the gaps that cause leaks because the roof is over 9,000 m2.

The inspection process also showed that after the linkages between screws, rubber gaskets, and the glue in the connections between the light-absorbing panels and the aluminum frame have deteriorated.

On Tuesday, engineers and workers cleaned part of the roof and covered it with a membrane-creating solution and a PE Hanbon self-adhesive membrane.

"This is the first time we have used the anti-leaking method using PE Hanbon of Korea. This material is also waterproof, and has noise and thermal insulation," Hung said.

The technology will be monitored in a week and if it works well, the entire roof will be covered by PE Hanbon. The work is scheduled for two months, at a cost of over VND1 billion ($50,000) and warranty period of five years.

The Da Nang International Airport terminal was constructed in late 2007 and put into use in December 2011. The roof leaked recently, affecting passengers. Most recently, on August 1, many passengers complained that they had to avoid puddles from the leaky roof in the terminal and boarding lounges.
