Vệt was premiered as a final Masters project by Vietnamese multimedia composer and electro-acoustic music performer Luong Hue Trinh at Hamburg University of Music and Theatre in 2018.
The project was inspired by the feudal conception of the role of women. For hundreds of years, Vietnamese culture has been strongly influenced by Confucianism. Therefore, the life of any woman is governed by the rule of three subordinations: to her father at home, to her husband after her marriage and to her son after the husband’s death.
Nowadays, the influence of Confucianism on Vietnamese culture has been blurred to a certain degree, especially in the young generations. However, there are still things that are ingrained in the mind of Vietnamese but not erased by modern ways of thinking and feeling.
Streaks approaches the topic of the role and image of women through five compositions by Trinh. The concert is dedicated to the musician SơnX, who has had a significant influence on Trinh’s musical path.
The concert will also feature Jeff von der Schmidt – founding Artistic Director of Southwest Chamber Music and the Los Angeles International New Music Festival. He received two Grammy Awards in 2003 and 2004 and a total of nine nominations for 30 recordings. He is the conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Hanoi New Music Ensemble.
Entry is free but space is limited. L’Espace is at 24 Trang Tien Street. — VNS
