VietNamNet Bridge – International grandmaster Le Quang Liem clinched the first win on July 16 after suffering two consecutive defeats at the ACP Golden Classic, an international chess tournament in the Netherlands.

The top Vietnamese chess player, holding black pieces, outperformed his Indian rival Krishnan Sasikiran after 49 minutes, to secure his first winning game at the tournament.

In the previous two games, Liem, with an Elo rating of 2703, was outclassed by Gata Gamsky (Elo 2741) from the US and Vassily Ivanchuk (Elo 2764) from Ukraine.

Seven players are battling for the ACP Golden Classic title in an unprecedented way in the computer era. They are competing under the same time control as was used in the World Championship matches in the Golden Era of chess: 2,5 hours/40 moves + adjournment.

The tournament, which lasts from July 14-22, has a total cash prize value of US$30,000.
