Vietnam’s top chess GM Le Quang Liem was defeated by his United Arab Emirates rival Salem Saleh at the fifth round of the Asian Chess Championships on May 9.    



Liem is now in 15th place with 3 points, 1.5 points less than Chinese player Yu Yang Yi, who is leading the open standard chess tournament.

On May 10, Liem is scheduled to face Jumabayev Rinat from Kazakhstan.

Meanwhile, two other Vietnamese players Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son and Dao Thien Hai beat Chinese Wei Yi and Indian Sethraman.

In the women's division, Nguyen Thanh An won against Batchimeg Tuvshintugs from Mongolia to remain in second position and narrow the gap with the division’s top player Sukandar Irine Kharisma from Indonesia to only 0.5 points.
