An installation by Vu Kim Thu using Japanese washi with Vietnamese dó (poonah) paper, line drawing and lighting.

On Friday at 6.30pm, Manzi Art Space will launch the solo exhibition Into Darkness by artist Vũ Kim Thư.

Into Darkness is the outcome of Thư’s continuous experimentation in combining Japanese washi with Vietnamese dó (poonah) paper, and line drawing with lighting.

The project-in-progress started in 2013 with Thư’s residency at Mino paper art village in Mino, Japan, where she learnt the art of washi and lantern making.

It later developed into a light installation at her 2014 residency at the Sapporo Artist in Residence Program in Hokkaido. The artist’s 2015 experimentation with the project at the ECO Art Project (Mường Art Studio in Hòa Bình, Việt Nam) saw her including elements of space and light design.

“My world consists of landscape, nature, architecture and abstract mark making and line drawing. It forms a three-dimensional map, possibly of a city, possibly an imaginary one. These images change as I arrive at a new destination, and as my personal experience and impression of that place begin to form," Thư said.

"As a traveller, I navigate a new city by synthesising its repeated forms, fragmentations, and architectural spaces with memory and observation. I re-imagine the place in the form of a map and with my personal visualisation,” she added.

The free exhibition will be held until May 31, from 8am to 10pm daily. Manzi Art Space is at 14 Phan Huy Ich Street, Hà Nội.
