VietNamNet Bridge – A 12-year old girl in Ha Tinh Province who weighs only four kilos, due to a serious digestion problem, has now only faint hope for staying alive.

Mai Anh is 12 years old but weighs only 4 kilos.

The girl named Mai Anh is now at Ha Tinh Genreal Hospital. Despite her struggle with death, Mai Anh is still of sound mind. She can answer all the reporters’ questions about her family and her dreams that will never come true. Sometimes, Mai Anh asks her mother to give her the new books given her by her relatives. She looks at the books attentively, then turns to ask her mother whether her disease can be cured or if she will die.

Her questions torture her mother who suffers many difficulties in her life. Over the past eight years, the woman, aged over 40, has had to witness her daughter’s pain, and even though she and her husband have tried their best to earn enough money to take their girl to hospital, their efforts have been in vain.

Doctor Tran Tuan who directly provides the treatment for Mai Anh said she was diagnosed with congenital Hirschsprung's disease which makes her belly swell and causes her breathing difficulties. Recently, she was taken to the hospital emergency room and luckily she was saved when doctors managed to remove fluid from her belly.

The doctor said, Mai Anh is very strong-willed and consequently is able to cope with very serious pain; she always takes her medicines as prescribed by the doctors and tries to bear the pain as well as she can.

Since she hasn't moved for many years, her legs have atrophied, making her much skinnier.

Mai Anh’s life is growing shorter, but her mother can’t do any more. She has sold all she can from the house to try and save her daughter. The whole family now depends on a modest salary sent by her husband who is working in Malaysia, however, the amount is just enough to pay the monthly interest on the loans they have taken to pay for treatment.  Meanwhile, her other daughter Vo Thi Huyen, 4 years old, is also sick much of the time.
