Vietnam has a chance to receive a wildcard to join the coming Summer Olympics in London, announced the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) on May 20.

Accordingly, a Vietnamese male track-and-field athlete will be selected for the world’s largest sporting event.

So far, Nguyen Thanh Phuc is the only representative of Vietnam’s athletics team at the event as she has qualified for the Olympics’ standard B.

Vietnam is still hopeful for winning one more official ticket to the Olympics as young stars Truong Thanh Hang and Vu Thi Huong are joining the Asian tourney in Kazakhstan on June 30.

If another Vietnamese athlete is qualified to proceed to the Games, the wildcard will be cancelled, according to the IAAF’s regulations.

At the moment, Nguyen Thanh Ngung, who is Phuc’s younger brother, is the most promising candidate to receive the wildcard as his recent result (1 minute, 27.57 seconds) at the Asian champs nearly reached standard B (1 minute, 24.30 seconds).
