The glasses were donated during a meeting at the office of the Disability Resource and Development (DRD) on Tuesday, Nov 18, in HCM City.

The awards ceremony was organised under the sponsorship of the Youth Social Work Centre of HCM City to mark the 32nd anniversary of Viet Nam's Teachers Day (Nov. 20).

Dr. Do Ba Hai, lecturer at HCM City University of Technology and Education, who is also deputy chairman of Viet Nam Youth Federation, developed the eyeglasses.

It was the third time the centre has donated the glasses to visually-impaired people. Eighty-one eyeglasses have been donated so far.

A sensor system attached to the eyepiece emits sounds that can help the blind recognise obstacles up to 1.2 metres in front of them.

Nguyen Quoc Phong, a visually-impaired teacher at Thien An shelter, said: "It makes me feel more comfortable and safe."
