VietNamNet Bridge – Local teen pop star Son Tung M-TP, who was accused of copying the melody of the song Because I miss you by South Korean singer/songwriter Jung Yong Hwa, leader of popular CNBlue band, has lately been cleared from the charge. According to a document of FNC Entertainment sent to the Performing Arts Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam, the company saw similarities on arrangement and melody between these two songs but they didn’t assume this was a copycat.
Representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Performing Arts Department, the Cinema Department and the Copyright Office of Vietnam last Saturday had an urgent meeting on the song Chac ai do se ve, also a theme song of the movie Chang trai nam ay which has had its premiere delayed due to the scandal on music copycat.
Phan Dinh Tan, spokesman of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, told VietnamPlus that they had conducted both law and music analytics to have the most suitable solutions. According to Tan, these two songs have certain similarities but people cannot confirm whether it is a copycat or not as there is no evidence.
Previously, in mid November, an appraisal committee consisting of local veteran and popular musicians, Pho Duc Phuong, Do Bao, Duong Khac Linh, Truong Ngoc Ninh and Le Minh Son, gave the final conclusion that the song was a copycat. According to the appraisal committee, the song Chac ai do se ve is 60% to 70% similar to Because I miss you.
Spokesman Phan Dinh Tan also said that although the ministry received a document from FNC Entertainment, they will still consider this case in a few days to have a final decision whether Son Tung M-TP has infringed on copyright or not before giving approval for the use of the song Chac ai do se ve.
Many audiences have shown their sympathy to Son Tung M-TP on Facebook pages and forums and requested local authorities to have right actions to clear the 20-year-old singer of the charges.
The song Chac ai do se ve composed by Son Tung M-TP was released on local online music sites on October 24. Since its debut the song has been on top of favorite songs on local music charts and helped bring Tung to the nomination list of local prestigious music awards of Lan Song Xanh organized by the radio Voice of HCMC.
However, on October 30, it was reported on the Fanpage of one of the members of CNBlue band, Lee Jung Shin, that Son Tung M-TP was a “music thief pro.” The page also said that Tung has stolen many songs of K-Pop (the pop music industry of Korea) artists, including Namolla Family, As One, Bang Yong Guk B.A.P and Exid and copied the style of Korean music star/fashion icon G-Dragon.
There was a big debate among local fans and experts about this scandal. And the organizing committee of Lan Song Xanh awards then withdrew his nomination.
