Young Vietnamese tennis talent Ly Hoang Nam missed out on the historic championship title of the 2015 Chang Thailand ITF Junior G1 after conceding two sets (3/6, 7/9) to Japanese Akira Santillan in their semifinal clash on March 7.

Santillan has been named top seed of the tournament with his 12th-place position in the ITF Junior Rankings. He previously made the boys’ single semifinals and the boys’ doubles quarterfinals at the 2015 Australia Open Juniors in January, where he beat Vietnam’s Ly Hoang Nam 2-1 in the second round (4/6, 7/6 and 6/4).

In their Saturday meeting, Hoang Nam was not able to utilise the opportunity to revenge his Australia Open loss against Santillan.

After a prompt first-set 3-6 defeat, the Vietnamese player made an impressive resurgence in the second set leading 2/0, 4/2 and 5/3, but only to see his efforts put out by Santillan, who fought back to equalise 6/6 before claiming the set 9/7 in tiebreaks.

Despite missing the overall title, Hoang Nam had his most successful international performance yet after he was named a finalist of the ITF Junior competition for the first time in his tennis career. As the runner-up, Nam got an additional 100 accumulation points and is likely to secure a position in the top 50 in the coming ITF Junior Rankings.

Hoang Nam will have several days off in Vietnam before flying to Malaysia to compete in the 25th Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup (I) ITF Junior Tennis Championship (Grade 1).
