VietNamNet Bridge – Two weeks before the Full Moon Festival, unicorn and lion head markers in Hue City are very busy at work. Let’s see how they make these traditional toys for the full moon festival.
Artisans began making unicorn and lion heads for the full moon festival from the second month of the lunar year. Hue’s unicorn and lion heads look different from those made by artisans in Saigon and some regions in the north. Paper must be dipped into water before it is pasted to the cement shape. Unicorn heads are exposed to the sun until they get dry.
Drawing patterns is the most important stage in making unicorn and lion heads. The skills of artisans will decide the beauty of the product.
After drawing, beard is pasted to the unicorn head. Making eyes is also important. Checking products before sales. There are over a dozen of households in Hue city making unicorn and lion heads. Most of them live in Phu Thuan and Thuan Hoa wards. Every Mid-Autumn festival, Nguyen Sinh Anh’s family produces over 3,000 products, which are provided to Hanoi and Nghe An. The average price is VND35,000/product. For the big ones, the price may be several million VND. |
