Parameswary Amutha G Letchmanan (born 1961) was invited to visit South Africa by a close friend. After the visit, the friend asked her to bring a suitcase to Malaysia in exchange for US$100.

Parameswary received the suitcase from an unknown man on July 24, 2012 and flew to Malaysia on August 3, transiting through Vietnam.

On August 4, after completing immigration procedures, the Customs Department at Tan Son Nhat International Airport found luggage which had not been collected. At 11pm on the same day, Parameswary contacted the airport authorities to collect her missing luggage.

The Customs discovered nearly 1.7kg heroin hidden in the suitcase.

Although Parameswary said she had no knowledge of the contents of the suitcase, she was held accountable for transporting the drugs into Vietnam.

A local First Instance Court sentenced her to life imprisonment.
