Pham Van Trong (born 1993, a resident of Chau Thanh district, An Giang province) – a student of the Can Tho University - is the only hope of his family, who are pure farmers.

Trong used to be a good student but he completely changed since he played online games.

Recently, Trong received an order from the leader of an online gamer to kill ten people if Trong wanted to join the group. Trong believed that the order was true and he made a script of mass murder.

Trong planned to kill one person every day, including five men and five women. He bought two knives, a mask, gloves and a black backpack. On June 12, the game addict began carrying out this crazy plan.

At 8pm, he left his room to 3/2 Road in Can Tho City. At the Rach Ngong Bridge, he saw a motorcycle taxi driver named Nguyen Thanh Tam (born 1974, a resident of Phung Hiep District, Hau Giang province) and decided to kill this man.

Trong hired the driver to take him to Phong Dien district at night at the price of VND50,000 ($2.5). As an experienced motorbike driver, Tam always took precautions when working at night but he did not doubt seeing Trong as a skinny and gentle student.

Trong suggested the driver to run on the quiet and dark Road 61B instead of Highway 1A to save time. Believing in the student, Tam agreed. Along the way, they talked a lot. Trong introduced himself as a second-year student at the University of Can Tho. Due to his father was seriously sick, he had to return home at night.

At Kinh Tac Bridge in Nhon Nghia commune, Phong Dien district, Can Tho city, Trong asked the driver to stop because his home was very near. Trong opened his backpack to take money to pay the driver but suddenly he pulled a knife and stabbed to the driver’s back.

The victim fought back and was stabbed more by Trong. The driver ran away and shouted for help. Some passers-by saw and intervened. Trong ran away.

As the boy was holding a knife, nobody chased him but called the police. The victim was treated at the Can Tho Clinic. The injuries were not very serious.

Trong was arrested on the road, about 1 km from the scene.

At the police station, the killer said that he "felt sorry for the failure of the murder," which had been planed in every detail. He admitted that the murder stemmed from a desire to participate in an online game group.

"Especially, this dangerous guy testified that he planned to kill 10 people at the request of the game group’s leader to become a member. Fortunately, we quickly stopped him," said Colonel Nguyen Van Mun--Phong Dien district police chief.

According to the police, Trong was a good student in the first two years at the college. Trong began playing online game when he was a 10th grader. He spent about four hours each day to play games. His parents are farmers, who had to try their best to support Trong’s study.
