Police spokesperson Nguyen Si Quang said the interrogation was ongoing because suspect Nguyen Hoang Nam appeared to be high on meth.

Nam is accused of killing his 51-year-old mother at their home in Tan Hiep Commune, Hoc Mon District, before going to his 83-year-old grandmother’s house in Xuan Thoi Thuong Commune and murdering her. He also assaulted his own father, nearly cutting off his hands and dealing several blows to his face and head.

Nam fled the house afterwards.

Nam’s father was rushed to hospital by neighbours but succumbed to his cut injuries.

Nam was apprehended late on Monday night.

Prior to the Hoc Mon rampage, Nam allegedly stopped at a relative’s house in Long An Province and killed another woman there.

Nam was once charged with robbery and has recently returned from rehab.
