Phu Tho police have recently prosecuted Pham Viet Cuong (residing in Thanh Hoa City) for murder.
The incident occurred at around 9 pm on September 9, at the home of Ms. Pham Thi Binh, 40, in Hung Vuong Ward, Phu Tho Town, Phu Tho Province. Binh is Cuong’s aunt.
Binh and 10 other members of the family were discussing the post-funeral tasks for her mother named Duyen, when suddenly from outside, Pham Viet Cuong, Duyen’s first paternal grandson, aggressively rushed into the house with a 5-liter plastic can of petrol. He threw gas on the 11 people in the room. The flame flared up when the gas was thrown to a candle.
Consequently, 9 out of 11 people in the room were burnt, including Cuong’s mother. The victims were brought to the National Burn Hospital.
After causing the incident, Pham Viet Cuong fled. However, on the morning of September 10, Cuong this went to the police to give himself up. Cuong is married and living in his wife’s hometown, Ngoc Trao Ward in Thanh Hoa City. Cuong had had disputes with his family before.
During his time in Phu Tho to organize his grandmother's funeral, the conflict was more serious and it culminated when Cuong was not allowed to participate in a family meeting to discuss the post-funeral task for his grandmother. Cuong was so angry so he used gasoline to cause injury to his relatives for the purpose of revenge.
By September 16, at least four victims were dead, including the killer’s mother. Two other victims are currently in critical condition.
