VietNamNet Bridge - Doan Van Duoc (better known as Ut Duoc), 50, started his treatment for a breast cancer patient by sitting behind her, grabbing a piece of her back skin and cutting it with a razor.

Then he took out a stick covered with alcohol-soaked cotton, lighted it and put it inside a small glass jar, which was then placed on the cutting spot. After a while, blood started to bleed into the jar.

Diem, 37, the breast cancer patient from Cu Chi said, “I heard that Dr. Duoc could cure any disease so I came. I feel much better now”.

Others agreed. “Some people spent hundreds of millions dong at hospitals without getting any result, but after they came here to see him, their illnesses were all gone.”

To another patient, Ut Duoc pressed his left hand on his abdomen, chest, and then forehead, while holding his right hand around the back of the patient’s head. Meanwhile, he kept whistling.

He even treated two patients at the same time-- one hand pressed on a female patient’s abdomen and the other on a male’s. Slowly, he moved his hands up to their chests, foreheads and continued his whistles.

When he was circling his hands over one patient’s stomach and another’s forehead, one patient familiar with his method explained to us, “That’s to suck the toxics out of their bodies’”.

Ut Duoc’s wife also helped to treat the patients. Sitting face-to-face with a patient and mumbling a string of strange-sounding words, she started moving her hands in the air around the crying woman. Then she began to massage and press her hands on the patient’s shoulder while soothing her and whistling like her husband.

After a while, the woman was asked, “Are you feeling well now?”, to which she replied, “I am all cured”.

Formerly a celebrated farmer known for his high agricultural productivity in the district, Ut Duoc has never received any medical training or education, nor been licensed for medical examination and treatment.

Reported by local residents for illegal medical activities, Duoc was warned not to repeat what he had been doing by the local police department.

However, people keep coming to see him every day. Through words of mouth, patients suffering various illnesses, from minor to serious ones, such as cancer, goiter, hepatitis, and fibroma, flock to receive his treatment.

Without fixing the treatment fees, Ut Duoc leaves it to his patients to decide how much to pay. A goiter patient who had seen him for several weeks said she paid him VND20,000-50,000 each time she came.

After Tuoi Tre reported to the local authority about Ut Duoc’s repeated illegal medical activities, head of the police department said he would soon inspect the case and take further action.
