The fitness center has closed after the incident.

On the morning of February 3, several members of the Thanh Nien Fitness Center on Le Hong Phong Road saw Nguyen Gia Khanh, 34, laying motionless on a chair, with the dumbbell on his neck.

They hurriedly took the 56kg dumbbell off Khanh’s neck and gave him artificial respiration but the man did not regain breathing. He was taken to a local hospital but doctors determined that he had died before admission.

According to the initial investigation, Khanh had been practicing at the club for about a year. At 5.15am he went to the club for practice. At that time, there were only two other members who were practicing in another corner of the room, so they did not see the accident.

The authorities examined the scene, and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

This is the first time such an accident has been reported in Vietnam.
