Nguyen Van Dao, 53, from Kim Son commune in Chau Thanh district, had a history of heart disease, his wife, Nguyen Thi Kim Son, said.

On February 21, Dao paid a visit to his relative in Long An Province. The next morning, Dao fell twice and had a stroke. He was brought to the hospital in Long An Province in a coma. His heart stopped beating several times and doctors said that he could not be cured.

Dao’s family decided to move him from Long An to a hospital in Tien Giang. On the way to his hospital, Dao’s heart suddenly stopped beating again so he was taken back to Long An Hospital.

"That afternoon, doctors said my husband was clinically dead so I asked the hospital’s permission to take my husband home. The doctor also said that my husband would die if the extubation was removed," Tuyet said.

After Dao was brought home, his family bought a coffin and held a funeral.

At noon on February 23, Pham Tan Loc from My Tho City in Tien Giang Province came to the funeral. Saying goodbye to Dao,, Loc touched Dao’s chest and discovered that the body was still warm and Dao was breathing weakly. He asked Dao’s family to take him to hospital.

After two hours, the patient gradually regained his senses. Dao left the hospital on March 6.

Dao’s family is very poor so they had to borrow VND14 million (nearly $700) to buy a coffin for him. The family returned the coffin but the store refused to return the money. They said that they would return the money if they could sell it to another customer. They would also deduct VND2 million from the total cost.
