VietNamNet Bridge - According to the World Health Organization (WHO), newly emerging diseases are the diseases that appear for the first time or may have existed previously but they quickly increase in the number of cases and in the number of geographic areas. Notably, all newly-emerged diseases are present in Vietnam.
 
According to the WHO, a number of diseases such as mad cow disease, HIV/AIDS, SARS, H5N1 and H1N1 flu, hemolytic diarrhea caused by E.coli, dengue fever, and hand-foot-mouth diseases are considered as newly emerging diseases with the rising number of cases and occurring in many countries.
 
Notably, these diseases have appeared in Vietnam and are developing complicatedly, with high numbers of cases and high rate of mortality.

Vietnam is also the home to newly emerged disease of unknown causes, such as the bizarre skin disease in the central province of Quang Ngai.
 
Speaking at the 63rd Western Pacific Conference of the WHO, which opened in Hanoi early this week, Dr Shin Young-soo, WHO Director in Western Pacific, said that the emergence of new diseases in the last 10 years has become a global problem, a challenge for scientists.
 
As usual, the meeting will focus on discussing and resolving outstanding medical issues, building policies and approving action programs for the next years with the goal of taking care and improving the health of people in the region and contributing to realize global health goals.
