With support from 16 organisations and individuals, the event saw 1.5 million breeding shrimps, 55,000 carp fry, and 15,000 breeding crabs, among other species, set free into the waters.

Fishing and aquatic farming have brought significant economic values to fishermen in Ha Tien for years. However, environmental pollution and overexploitation have depleted the local fishery resources.

Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Pham Van Xuan said the locality’s annual release of breeding aquatic species into natural bodies of water has so far received great assistance from organisations, businesses and individuals, bringing in practical outcomes in the protection and development of the resources.

The local authorities took the occasion to urge the public to join hands in protecting fishery reserves, and say no to fishing on breeding seasons as well as to the use of electricity, explosives, and chemicals in fishing.-VNA
