VietNamNet Bridge – A meeting was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on June 25 to celebrate the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year and the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties (1967-2012).

Cementing Vietnam-Cambodia ties

In his speech, Speaker of the Cambodian Parliament, Heng Somrin, affirmed that the time-honoured special friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia has been fostered by many generations and will continue far into the future.

Cambodia is forever grateful to the material and spiritual support offered by the Vietnamese people and their great sacrifices that helped Cambodians escape from the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime.

Vietnam has also provided technical assistance and human resources for Cambodia to help with its process of national reconstruction.

Since the 1979 victory in Cambodia, the Vietnamese Government has assisted the country in rebuilding electricity networks along border areas, explore clean water resources, develop its education, sports and healthcare sectors, and deal with religious affairs.

Mr Somrin also highlighted Vietnam’s contributions to ensuring peace, prosperity, political stability, and national reconciliation in his country, and for helping to rebuild its national economy after decades of war.

Vietnamese ambassador to Cambodia Ngo Anh Dung said Vietnam and Cambodia have always given each other much reciprocal support and assistance in their past struggles for national liberation, as well as during their current processes of national construction and development.

Vietnam is committed to being a consistent, faithful and reliable neighbour ready to share both joys and sorrows with Cambodia and work for happiness and prosperity in both nations.

The day after the meeting, two Prime Ministers witnessed the official inauguration of milestone No 314, which is the final numerical marker of the Vietnam-Cambodia border.
