Vietnamese men failed to defend their top 7th place finish at the Olympiad world chess team championships in Norway, sliding down 20 notches to 27th.

In the final round on August 14, Vietnam was defeated by Spain 1.5-2.5.

Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son capped off the tournament with a solid performance vanquishing Anton Guijarro and pocketing a gold medal.  

The remaining team members suffered defeat. Le Quang Liem was trounced by Vallejo Pons, Nguyen Duc Hoa beaten by Salgado Lopez and Nguyen Van Huy lost to Cordo Illescas.

Meanwhile, the female chess team beat El Salvador 4-0 to gain 14 points and rank 19th overall. All four female athletes showed no difficulty against their rivals listing lower on the world rankings.

Russia took the championship title for women while a strong Chinese squad claimed the trophy for men at the tournament.
