Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh narrowly defeated Malaysia’s Tan Chun Seang 2-1 in the third round of the US Open Badminton Championships on July 11.
Minh started well, taking the first set 21-16, but lost the second 21-12 as his opponent attempted a comeback.
Minh halted Seang’s momentum with 16 successive points, claiming the 53 minute victory with the final set score line of 21-08.
This is Minh’s fifth win against the Malaysian opponent out of their seven previous encounters. His next most recent was at the All England Open Badminton Championships last March.
He is scheduled to face the host nation’s Sattawat Pongnairat in the quarterfinals.
Minh’s female teammate Vu Thi Trang lost her third round match 18-12 and 16-21 to Thailand’s Salakjit Ponsana.
Minh’s US tournament success consolidates his Badminton World Federation 9th place ranking, his 51,166 points more than 2,000 points lower than Denmark’s 8th ranked Jan Jorgensen.
Malaysian Lee Chong Wei still leads the rankings, followed by Chinese players Chen Long and Du Pengyu.
