Minh goes on to third round in men's singles at Vietnam Open
National hopeful Nguyen Tien Minh advanced to the third round of the Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open's men's singles yesterday (August 26) in HCM City.
Minh, seeded No 7 here, won 22-20, 21-15 over Thai representative Kantawat Leelavechabutr in nearly an hour at the Nguyen Du Stadium.
Minh, the former world No 6, will next face No 10, Wei Feng Chong of Malaysia.
In their four previous meets, Minh won three and lost one.
In the women's singles, top Vietnamese female badminton player Vu Thi Trang lost to Ongbumrungphan Busanan of Thailand in the first round match.
The Thai player, world No 17 and the tournament's No 1 seed, beat Trang 21-9, 14-21, 21-18 in 58 minutes.

The Thai player beat Trang 21-9, 14-21, 21-18 in 58 minutes of the women's singles' first round.
Tonight, Trang will pair with her teammate Vu Thi Sen in the match against South Koreans Chae Yoo Jung and Kim Hye Rin in the women's doubles.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Tien Minh will meet Leelavechabutr Kantawat of Thailand in the second round of the men's singles event.
Long An beat off competition at swimming championships
Long An triumphed at the National Finswimming and Swimming Clubs Championships, which ended in the southern Can Tho Province yesterday, August 26.
The team won 30 gold medals after four days of competition. Vinh Long came second with 16 golds. The third position went to Dong Nai with 11 titles.
In the finswimming category, National Defence Sport Centre 5 took the lead with 18 gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals. Tay Ninh and Long An are second and third, respectively.
Nearly 200 swimmers from 13 teams participated in the four-day event.
