Minh, world No 58, beat Henrikho Kho Wibowo of Indonesia, world No 224, 21-14, 21-16 after 26 minutes.

Minh, 35, will next meet Daniel Fan of Australia, world No 197.

Other Vietnamese representatives, Le Duc Phat, world No 142, lost to Ajay Jayaram of India (No 71) 19-21, 12-21. While the female duo Vu Thi Trang/Nguyen Thi Sen also lost to Chinese Chen Lu/Xu Ya 21-18, 14-21, 18-21.

More than 400 professional badminton players from 26 nations and territories are competing in the event, which will run until August 12. They compete in five categories, namely men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles, with total prize money of US$75,000 on offer.

The event is a prestigious tournament held annually in Vietnam. Its results are included in the BWF ranking system.
