Hai said that the center can only forecast cyclones a few hours before they occur, and is totally unable to predict hailstorms.

After the immense damage caused by the recent cyclones in the northern mountainous regions on May 2, local authorities have implemented several measures to prevent further damage from other cyclones expected again this month.

Regions currently reeling under the devastation caused by the recent storms include Lao Cai, Son La, Cao Bang, Lai Chau and Tuyen Quang provinces.

A strong whirlwind blew away roofs of thousands of houses in Ha Giang Province causing much damage to property, with estimated losses going upto VND5 billion (US$240,000).

The People’s Committee in Bac Kan Province is now laying out plans to evacuate 200 households from landslide prone areas.

The central province of Thua Thien-Hue has also suffered immense damage from heavy rains and cyclones over the last few days. About 1,400 hectares of winter-spring rice crops in Phong Dien and Quang Dien District and Huon Thuy Town have been destroyed.
