VietNamNet Bridge – Several well-known movies from France and the USA will be introduced to Hanoian audiences this weekend.

“Before” Trilogy: Before Midnight (America, 2013, 109 minutes) will be screened at The Centre for Assistance and Development of Movie Talents, 51 Tran Hung Dao Street (4th floor) on September 29, 7.30 pm.

Before Midnight is the third in the Before trilogy featuring two characters, following Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004). It was directed by Richard Linklater and stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Co-written by Linklater, Hawke and Delpy, the film picks up the story nine years after the events of Before Sunset; Jesse (Hawke) and Céline (Delpy) spend a summer vacation together in Greece.

Following a limited opening in May, the film was released wide in June 2013 and grossed over $20 million worldwide. As with the second entry of the trilogy, Before Midnight received widespread acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

“Indochine” will also come on September 29, 8pm at L’Espace, 24 Trang Tien Street.

“Indochine” is a 1992 French film set in colonial French Indochina during the 1930s to 1950s. It is the story of Éliane Devries, a French plantation owner, and of her adopted Vietnamese daughter, Camille, with the rising Vietnamese nationalist movement set as a backdrop. The screenplay was written by novelist Érik Orsenna, scriptwriters Louis Gardel, Catherine Cohen, and Régis Wargnier, who also directed the film. 

The film stars Catherine Deneuve, Vincent Pérez, Linh Dan Pham, Jean Yanne and Dominique Blanc. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 65th Academy Awards.

“Letters to Max” (France, 2014, 103 minutes) directed by Eric Baudelaire will be screened at Six Space, 6th floor, 94B Tran Hung Dao on September 30, 7pm.

When artist and filmmaker Eric Baudelaire posted a letter to Maxim Gvinjia, Abkhazia's former Minister of Foreign Affairs, he expected it to be returned 'destination unknown'. To his surprise, he received a phone call from Max. So began a conversation between them chronicling the contested state of Abkhazia, situated on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, which seceded from Georgia during the 1992-93 Civil War and remains a disputed territory.

“Jack et la Mécanique du Coeur” (France, 2011, 89’) will be screened on October 1, at 3.30 pm at L’Espace, 24 Trang Tien Street.

The movie was directed by Mathias Malzieu and Stéphane Berla, with the voices of Rossy de Palma, Olivia Ruiz, Arthur H, and Jean Rochefort.

“Jack et la mécanique du coeur” contains all the elements a good movie should have: beautiful emotions, typical characters, cartoon stylish drawings, and lots of musical tunes for all ages. The story of the journey to find the love of a boy whose hearts is made of mechanical clock – Jack – is a life journey. 

“Jack et la mécanique du coeur” satisfies our eyes and ears, make us dream, tremble, laugh and cry. We even have stronger emotion when knowing this is the first feature-length film of Malzieu and Stéphane Berla.

Another French movie - “Dalida” - will be introduced by L'Espace on October 1.

“Dalida” is a 2017 French biographical drama film based on true events about the life of Dalida – one of the leading French female singers in the 20th century with over 130 million records sold worldwide. It is written, directed and co-produced by Lisa Azuelos, and stars the Italian actress Sveva Alviti as Dalida.
